About Ideuma Creek
Alpacas
Ideuma
Creek Alpaca Farm is located in the scenic foothills of the Catskill
Mountains. The land has been continually farmed for well over one hundred
and fifty years. It has always been our wish to continue this
tradition. When we saw our first alpaca, like so many of you reading this,
we knew we were hooked, and sooner rather than later, alpacas would become a
part of our lives.
John
and I have been raising alpacas for what seems like forever. We
simply
love it! It is hard to believe it was only ten years ago that we purchased
our first three pregnant females. Our herd continues to grow and
grow! We always have about 50 alpacas here on our farm, and we usually
have about a dozen to twenty cria every spring and summer. This is probably
our favorite time of the year! As we gain more and more experience with
breeding our alpacas, we find we are able "criate" beautiful alpacas
blending color, density, crimp, coverage and softness. We have full Accoyo,
Peruvian, Bolivian and Chilean herd sires here at Ideuma Creek Alpacas whom we are
extremely proud of! We also have an alpaca of every color on the alpaca
color chart and a few more!
Because
alpaca farming
is much easier than most farming, both John and I are able to retain our
"pre-alpaca" careers as teachers. John teaches alternative
education to 16-21 years old, and I teach 8th grade English. We do
plan for most of our crias to arrive during the summer so we can be of
assistance if needed. To date we have had 61 crias born, and only one has needed any
help at all! (see Clyde's Cria Page for
details) We have found every aspect of alpaca farming to be easy and fun -
honestly!
It's
always fun to ask alpaca owners which came first for them - the love of the
fiber or the love of the animal. For us it was definitely the
animal. And although we
still love the farming part very much, we also love sharing finished alpaca
products, especially with people who aren't familiar with how luxurious and warm
alpaca really is. We attend several fairs and festivals though out the
year, selling alpaca products and answering a flood of questions about owning
these adorable creatures. We have also recently opened a farm store.
If you'd like to see it, just click here. Our hours are by
appointment. And, of course, we also provide an on line
store. We
found people who have visited our farm or who have seen us at a fair, just seem
to need one or two more items they didn't purchase the first time around.
Alpaca items are certainly addictive!
Our teddy bears are our
most popular item.
Each bear is named after a similarly colored alpaca or llama on our farm.
Each bear comes with a tag bearing (excuse the pun!) the name and picture of the
alpaca or llama that the bear is named after and a brief history of the animal.
These animals have irreversibly become a very important and welcome part of our daily lives. We extend an open invitation to you to come and visit our farm; you may feel some of the same magic we feel every day. But beware, if you visit, you may end up coming home with an alpaca or two!
