The Wonders of Alpaca Fiber

History

Alpacas were a cherished treasure of the ancient Inca civilization.  They once roamed exclusively on the high Andean plateau and mountains of South America.  Because of the luxurious fiber they produce that was once reserved for Incan royalty, alpacas have recently been introduced into The United States.  Here we enjoy the beauty of the alpaca as well as their warm and wonderful fiber.

Lots of  Color

Alpacas produce one of the world's finest and most sought-after natural fibers.  It is as soft as cashmere and warmer, lighter and stronger than wool.  Alpaca comes in more colors than any other fiber producing animal from pure white through fawn, to a range of browns, and a true jet black.  Colors then shade out in grays from steel blue to pale silver and vibrant rose.  The worldwide fiber market recognizes 22 natural colors of alpaca.  Alpaca fiber is spun either by hand spinners or by machine into yarn.  This yarn is turned into some of the most beautiful garments and products of natural colors and shades that you can imagine. Alpaca can also be easily dyed and it retains its natural luster.

Easy to Care For

One of the many advantages of alpaca is its ease of maintenance.  Grease and oil do not spot alpaca as readily as they do other fibers.  Due to alpaca's ability to repel water, spills can be easily blotted up.  And the nature of the fiber reduces static electricity, which attracts dust and soil.  Care for your alpaca garments just like you would any other fine wool.  They may be dry cleaned or hand washed.  Many of the items that you will find in our on-line store are machine washable in cold water on the gentle cycle.  The can be put in the dryer for fluffing only.

Warm & Wonderful

Because alpacas were originally raised at such high altitudes in freezing cold, they developed more thermal capacity in their fiber than almost any other animal.  Their fiber contains microscopic air pockets which create lightweight garments with high insulation values.  This is why alpaca garments are so light weight yet so warm.  You don't need the bulkiness of sheep wool garments to keep warm in alpaca.

So Very Soft

If you've never had the pleasure of feeling the softness of an alpaca, you probably will be surprised at how fine the garments are that are made from their fiber.  Alpaca is soft, supple and smooth to the touch.  The cellular structure of the fiber produces a soft handle unmatched by most other specialty fibers.  Alpaca fiber also contains no guard hair.  The fleece has a natural, rich luster which gives garments made from 100% alpaca high visual appeal.
